Development cooperation and humanitarian affairs minister Paulette Lenert (LSAP) visited Niger from 17 to 20 October to approve a budget increase for projects in rural development, public expenditure management and water and sanitation. The minister took the opportunity to announce that Luxembourg will open an embassy in Niamey, the capital of the West African country.
Once the Luxembourgish Embassy in Niger opens, Luxembourg will have 30 official diplomatic representations throughout the world, not counting consulates. The minister announced the upgrading of the Luxembourg office in Niamey to embassy status during thirtieth anniversary celebrations marking Luxembourg Cooperation’s interventions in Niger. According to the government, the country is currently covered by the Luxembourg ambassador to Senegal, Nicole Bintner.
In addition to its 30 embassies, Luxembourg has five permanent representations (at institutions such as NATO, the EU, and the United Nations), three general consulates (New York, San Francisco, and Shangai), and 143 honorary consulates.
The Luxembourgish State owns 33 residences around the world and two official residences. The state also rents dwellings in some 20 countries.
